Work boot resoling: factory recrafting or an independent cobbler?
If your work boots come from Red Wing, Danner, White's or Thorogood, you can usually send them back to the maker or to an independent cobbler. Each brand runs this differently. Below is what each brand's own repair page said when we checked it on 26 October 2026, and how to decide between the two routes.
The brand programs at a glance
| Brand | Who does the work | Published resole price | Turnaround |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red Wing | Red Wing Repair Shop, Red Wing, MN, plus local repair partners | $165 for a resole (includes oiling and new laces where applicable). $180 Premium Repair Package. Heels only: $60 | Not published on the repair page |
| Danner | Danner Recrafting Department, Portland, OR | Resole $100–140 depending on style. Rebuild $280 | 4 weeks from receipt (stated on the page) |
| White's | White's Repairs Department, Spokane, WA | $150–275 (as of 1 January 2026). Rebuilds from $432 (Stitchdown) or $478 (Handsewn Stitchdown) | Varies through the year. Ask the Repairs Department |
| Thorogood | No in-house program. Thorogood points owners to cobblers and authorized retail partners | Thorogood's own page puts a typical resole at "around $100–150" | Depends on the shop |

Red Wing
- Red Wing-made boots only. The repair shop only works on boots made by Red Wing Shoe Company: Red Wing, WORX and Irish Setter.
- Not every style can be resoled. Red Wing says welt-constructed boots can be repaired, barring excessive wear, but not all of its boots can be resoled. It also says boots with cracked insoles, torn uppers or worn-through linings usually can't be repaired.
- How to send them. Print and fill in the PDF repair form, then take it and the boots to a Red Wing store, or contact customer service for a free shipping label (offered for services over $50). Take out laces, footbeds and anything personal first. Red Wing says it can't return them.
- Earlier repairs can rule it out. Red Wing says it sometimes can't repair boots that another shop has already worked on, because of how that repair was done. If you might want a factory resole later, keep that in mind before sending the boots elsewhere.
- Canada: Red Wing says repair services for Canadian customers are limited and points them to local Red Wing stores. In Canada, DeVito's Shoe Repair in Nelson, BC describes itself as Red Wing's only certified repair service in the country.
Danner
- Recraftable styles only. Danner lists the Mountain Light, Danner Light, Mountain Pass, Acadia, Bull Run, Danner Ridge, Elk Hunter, Marine Expeditionary Boot, Quarry USA, Rain Forest and Sierra among them. The Mountain 600 Leaf GTX qualifies for a resole only. Danner's online assessment tool or the boot's product specifications will confirm whether yours qualifies.
- Condition limits. The uppers must be free of holes and major cracking. The welt can't be excessively worn, and the leather can't be cracking at the welt base, because the new sole is stitched through it.
- What's included. A Danner resole also covers reconditioning the uppers, stitching and hardware repairs, and new laces. A rebuild replaces the boot's components from the ground up. Return shipping is free. Danner's order form adds a $150 surcharge for return shipping outside the USA and Canada.
- Prep. The order form asks you to remove mud, laces and insoles before you ship.
White's
- White's boots only. All White's styles except the Grande Ronde Series can be resoled, and the Stitchdown and Handsewn Stitchdown styles can be fully rebuilt. Boots whose uppers have deteriorated may be past rebuilding.
- Rebuilds are extensive. White's says a standard rebuild replaces the outsole, midsole, insole, heel base, heel cap, vamp, heel counter, false tongues and laces, and that it rebuilds on the original last. Special requests (double midsoles, toe caps, safety toes, size changes) cost extra.
- Process. Download the repair form and send it with the boots to the Repairs Department in Spokane. You'll get an emailed sales order after they evaluate the boots. You can pay in advance or when the work is done.
White's isn't the only option for its boots. Drew's Boots in Eugene, OR lists factory rebuilds for White's, Drew's and Nick's boots and publishes a $140 (plus shipping) Boot Overhaul Special.
Thorogood
Thorogood doesn't resole boots itself. Its restoration page suggests a trusted local cobbler or one of its authorized retail partners. It also warns that any restoration or alteration by a third-party service provider voids Thorogood's warranty. If your boots are still under warranty, use that first.
Two mail-in shops in our directory run Thorogood-specific packages:
- NuShoe runs a Thorogood Boot Restoration Program: Complete Restoration $130, or Classic Restoration $100 (no new heel liners). It says it uses original Meramec soles and substitutes the closest comparable sole if the identical one isn't available.
- Fred's Shoe Repair in Peoria, IL sells a Thorogood resole package from $145, with welt and midsole options. Its stated turnaround is about 2–4 weeks after arrival.
Why choose the factory
- Original components and methods. Danner says its recrafters rebuild "using the machines they were originally built with". White's rebuilds on the original last. If you want the boot to look and feel stock, this is the most direct route.
- The extras are bundled. Red Wing's and Danner's resoles include laces and leather reconditioning. Danner's also includes stitching and hardware repairs on eligible boots.
- It keeps the factory option open. Red Wing's note about earlier third-party repairs is the main reason some owners send boots to the factory first.
Why choose an independent cobbler
- Any brand, one shop. Factory programs only take their own boots. An independent shop can do a mixed batch.
- More sole and welt choices. For example, Fred's Thursday Boot package offers Dainite, Vibram Christy, Vibram 430 and 1136, or leather soles, with the original welt reused or a new flat or storm welt, and an optional rubber or leather midsole. Wyatt & Dad lists JR leather, Vibram, Dainite and Dr. Sole options.
- Comparable prices. Published prices we've seen run from $140 plus shipping (Drew's) and from $145 (Fred's), against $165 at Red Wing and $100–140 at Danner.
- Not always faster. Lead times vary a lot. When we checked, Wyatt & Dad's homepage showed a 12-week lead time, Fred's said 2–4 weeks and Danner said 4 weeks. Ask before you ship.
A quick way to decide
- Still under warranty? Contact the maker first, especially Thorogood, where third-party work voids the warranty.
- Want it stock, or might want a factory resole later? Use the factory program (Red Wing, Danner or White's).
- Want a different sole, a midsole added, or several brands done at once? Use an independent shop, and say exactly which sole you want. See 9 questions to ask a cobbler.
- Cracked insole, torn upper, or worn-through lining? Neither route may be able to save the boots. Read are my boots worth resoling? before paying for shipping.
