Hiking boot resoling by mail

Many hiking and backpacking boots can be resoled, but not all of them, and fewer shops do the work than for work boots. The first question is how the sole is attached. The second is who the boot's maker trusts to replace it. Below is what the makers' own pages said when we checked them on 26 October 2026.

First: is the sole cemented or injected?

Most resoleable hiking boots use cemented construction. The upper is lasted over an insole, and the midsole and outsole are glued on under pressure. To resole one, the shop removes the old sole completely and cements a new one in place. Asolo says it makes all its footwear this way and that cement-lasted boots "can be resoled over and over again". LOWA says resoling is possible for all of its cemented shoes.

Injected soles are moulded directly onto the upper, and they are often a dead end. LOWA US says injected models such as the Renegade EVO and Zephyr MK2 can't be resoled without compromising the shoe's structure, though minor repairs like restitching and replacing hardware are sometimes possible. If you aren't sure which construction your boots use, look the model up on the maker's site or send photos to a resoler before shipping anything.

Some models are excluded by name. Crispi says most of its boots can be resoled, but not the Attiva series, Attiva Mid series, Monaco Premium or Anchor Point.

Things the brands warn you about

How the mail-in process usually runs

  1. Ask first, with photos. Daub's asks for a quote request with photos before you ship. Crispi asks for photos of both boots and the size tag on the tongue.
  2. Clean the boots. Knock the mud off, and take out insoles and laces you want to keep unless the shop asks for them.
  3. Put your details inside the box. Daub's says every repair must include your name, phone, email and address on paper inside the package, and recommends a trackable USPS, UPS or FedEx service.
  4. Approve the final price. Daub's inspects on arrival, confirms or updates the estimate, then takes payment. It says return shipping takes about 4–7 days once the work is done.

Turnaround at the shop varies. When we checked, Rock and Resole's homepage gave about 4 weeks for boots and approach shoes. Asolo Italy quoted about 15 working days from arrival, and Crispi quoted 1–3 weeks. Add shipping time in both directions.
